FaceBook, Thy Name is Vanity
In the quest to register a vanity username on the social networking site Facebook, people propped their eyes open, swigged extra-strong coffee, and hunkered down to get their username. In the first few minutes of Saturday 200,000 new usernames were registered. In less than 15 minutes it was 500,000.
Most people are happy, I’m sure. But Ashton Kutcher might not be.
That’s because his potential new username - http://www.facebook.com/aplusk (which matches his Twitter account) – was registered by Benjamin Standefer of San Francisco, CA. Ouch. Ashton got punk’d on that one. Wonder what he’ll do now. So far nothing has been posted on his Twitter, so maybe it isn’t a big deal to him.
Mostly, though, it was fairly uneventful – apparently the biggest issue was some pages loading slowly, and some common first names not being available. Some are theorizing that Facebook put a freeze on them.
As one person was quoted over at CNet.com: “Well, that was anti-climactic. Worked, no bugs, and I got my name. Was exciting for a hot second though!”
Some interesting and humorous conversation is going on over at Robert Scobel’s FriendFeed page.
Did you get your username? If not, you can still register yours at http://www.facebook.com/username/
